New LivingCenter’s Design Features Internet Access, Country Kitchens,
and a Short-Stay Rehabilitation Unit

ERIE, Pa., November 23, 2009 — Golden Living brings a new level of superior healthcare to northwestern Pennsylvania with a new $17 million facility at 4801 Old Zuck Road in Erie.  View photos.

The new facility replaces the old Golden LivingCenter - Erie located on Peach Street. The older Peach Street LivingCenter was based around the old Battersby family mansion, which was built in the early 1900s. While the older facility accommodated 115 patients in approximately 28,000 square feet, the new Golden LivingCenter – Walnut Creek serves the same number of patients in a much-larger 72,065-square-foot building.

“Spaciousness, comfort, efficiency and high technology are the hallmarks of the new LivingCenter, which has been designed around a patient-centered care model of healthcare,” said Robert Etchells, Executive Director of Golden LivingCenter - Walnut Creek. “The new building’s design puts the needs of the patient first, and creates a more welcoming environment. It also gives them more autonomy and choice,” he added.

For example, the new LivingCenter is divided into five separate and self-contained “neighborhoods” — each with accommodations for 20 to 30 people. Each neighborhood features its own living room, private dining area and “country kitchen” where patients can eat according to their own schedules or get a snack whenever they want. The plush main dining room features restaurant-style service. There is a large central atrium where patients can meet for conversation and relax. Individual rooms have been improved as well. Each patient room has its own spacious bathroom and shower. The LivingCenter includes 21 private rooms.

Golden Living – Walnut Creek provides a variety of specialized services. One of the neighborhoods is a 24-bed Alzheimer’s Care Unit devoted exclusively to meeting the unique needs of Alzheimer’s patients. There is also a dedicated 21-bed short-term rehabilitation unit tailored to treating adults of all ages who are in need of intensive physical, occupational, and speech therapy services with the goal of returning home.

Aegis Therapies, a Golden Living company, will provide therapy services at the new building. A full range of therapy services are offered in the new 4,200 square foot therapy gym. The gym features the most advanced strength training equipment, therapy modalities and computer-assisted interactive exercise programs.

Therapy services are available six days a week, and Aegis therapists provide home evaluations to ensure a smooth and safe transition to home. Once patients return home, their therapy programs will continue through Aegis’ comprehensive outpatient therapy services.

Wireless technology is utilized throughout the building. Patients, family members and other visitors can take advantage of the building’s high-speed wireless Internet connections. Ten common-area computers also will be available to patients.

“The use of wireless technology throughout the new building helps our clinical staff provide the best care possible,” noted Etchells. “For example, we will be using the system for more efficient and accurate computerized record keeping and medication management.”
